A fatal railway accident in the southern state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive censure from critics regarding the pace and handling of the country's key government projects.
The accident took place on the Interoceanic Train, a line developed to join the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was created to establish an competing rail corridor to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring commercial progress in the area.
“We are going to meticulously determine the cause of this tragedy,” declared the national leader.
The official announced that, of the approximately 250 people on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in serious condition. The leader stated plans to visit Oaxaca to meet those affected.
Flagship Project of Past Leadership
The Interoceanic Train was a central infrastructure project of the previous administration, whose time in office concluded the prior year. This rail line was closely associated with his administration's strategic vision for the southeastern region.
Another multi-billion dollar rail project from that time, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the comprehensive effort to stimulate the economic fortunes of a comparatively less developed part of the country.
Building Management and Worries
The construction of both rail lines was supervised by the army, marking a notable increase of its role in public works. They were completed at an accelerated pace, surpassing forecasts to be at least partly opened before the end of that administration.
However, this rushed timetable had simultaneously fueled significant questions over safety standards.
- Sunday's accident was the third event on the Interoceanic Train this year.
- This encompasses an prior crash this month when a train struck a truck at a level crossing.
- The other major rail project has also experienced a couple of non-lethal derailments.
Calls for Review and Suspension
In the aftermath of the catastrophe, the chief of a key rival party demanded an immediate pause in the building and running of all such projects.
This halt was suggested pending a comprehensive independent investigation. The party declared that the loss of life "demands immediate answers."
In reaction, the national leader insisted that the train had been operating in complete accordance with all safety requirements. Assurances were given that the government would remain "diligent" in both the development and management of these vital undertakings.
