The star has given the entirety of his £25k Mercury Prize cash to the Music Venues Trust, which functions to protect the Britain's independent concert spaces.

Fender was presented with the prize on October 16 as his new release People Watching was declared the top album of the past year.

Fender has decided to hand the money over to the Music Venues Trust, in acknowledgment of the vital role small stages had in his initial steps.

"I wouldn't be doing my current career if it weren't for all the shows I played around the area, and beyond, when I was beginning," said the artist. "These venues are renowned, but they are facing challenges."

From early 2023 onward, more than 150 of these spaces have ceased operations – roughly 16 percent of the total UK scene.

Over the past year, top acts including Pulp, Coldplay, the singer Katy Perry and Ed Sheeran have all backed the MVT in its efforts to support the industry, by including a modest fee to their ticket costs, which supports smaller concert halls.

Sam Fender also took part, collecting in excess of £100,000 on his 2024 arena tour to help numerous grassroots venues across the UK.

The money helped venues that were dealing with imminent closure due to challenges caused by floods, fires and personal losses, as well as permit problems, conflicts and noise complaints.

Other venues received financial assistance in improving amenities and gear that helped artists and audiences.

"The notion that revenue from shows in big venues supports the independent spots, where it kicks off for performers like me, is just logical," Sam Fender has stated.

Fender is not the first artist to donate his Mercury Prize prize money to worthy causes.

In they won the prize in the year 1996 for their release Different Class, frontman Cocker declared that the act would contribute their prize money to the organization War Child.

That year, artist the artist shared her award across several charities, like the NSPCC and a charity for Sickle Cell.

"Additionally, I donated a £1,000 to my local community centre, to their classes, because I trained in gymnastics when I was a child and they required new equipment," Ms Dynamite explained to a publication.

Previously, the band contributed their winnings to the youth organization that developed their band, in addition to other independent music bodies.

And the 1994 recipients the group donated their winnings to a multiple sclerosis charity after a close contact was found to have the disease.

"The victory was sufficient," said vocalist Heather Small. "The cash was the extra but we didn't need the bonus, because we had the honor. So our success impacted another person's life."

Last week, the Music Venues Trust shared it had saved several grassroots venues in that region, by transferring them to local control.

The Joiners in that area and the second in that location were purchased under the community ownership program, which is backed by a national body and music fans who purchase "ownership units" in the properties.
